Is owning a Snoopy watch better than seeing the cartoon? You probably think you already know what the answer is for yourself for this. But I wanted to pose the question anyway. I think we can all agree that having the characters in our collective consciousness is indispensable. But what makes us happier, the idea or the merchandise? Or are they one and the same thing? Does that lovable pooch have such an effect on us because of his appearance or because of the years of stories behind him? I have given this some thought for myself. Maybe a little bit too much, in fact.

This began with a silly conversation that I was having with a good friend over dinner out one night. It is now known as The Great Snoopy Watch Debate. We traditionally get caught up in discussions of this nature. How the Peanuts comic strip, Charlie Brown, and the whole gang got into it, I am not entirely certain, but that was the focus on this particular occasion. Now that I think about it though, I suppose it started because I had decided to wear my Snoopy watch that night and he noticed it. I don't know why it was any different then. I am a big fan of Charlie Brown and I have worn it many times before.
His argument was that the cartoon movies give people more joy than any merchandise ever could. And that things like the Snoopy watch were practically unnecessary. I am reading between the lines a little bit with that, but it was what he was getting at. Although he didn't come right out and say that anything made from the characters shouldn't exist, I think that's how he really feels. But to admit to being so hard-nosed about a Snoopy watch is something that I can't see him ever doing. He is a horrible purist with the stories and characters that he enjoys though. He likes to just keep them pefectly in that one medium that they were so unforgettable in. I have had some of the best debates with him over books that were being turned into movies.
My take on the whole matter is that icons like Charlie Brown, Lucy, The Red Baron, and everything else that started with a strip as wonderful as that was, give us more pleasure when we can have a bit of them with us every day. I get a kick out of it every time I check the time. And although I love the movies, I can only see them so much. There are only so many times you can watch something, no matter what it is. "Peanuts" movies are at the top of my list, but it's nowhere near every day that I see them, or every week even. But I do check the time on several instances throughout the day. So, no I don’t think a little bit of swag cheapens anything at all. If anything, my Snoopy watch gives me more pleasure than the movies could, and on a more consistent basis too.
